Keep Certain Materials Out of Your Trash Can. 

Fires can occur in piles of trash as trash is collected in trash trucks, and when trash is delivered and aggregated at the Transfer Station and the Resource Recovery Facility for processing. Certain materials can individually pose a fire hazard.  Other items pose a risk for fire when they come into contact with other materials. 

To reduce the risk of trash fires at your home, in our trash collection vehicles, or at our disposal facilities, please keep the following materials or items out of your trash:

·        Hazardous materials

·        Chemicals

·        Gasoline and other flammable liquids

·        Oil-based paints

·        Rechargeable batteries (containing heavy metals, including lithium)

·        Ash from fireplaces or fire pits or barbeque grills

To dispose of these items safely, use our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program or Special Collection Processes at the Montgomery County Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station. Renting a truck on a weekend for moving a large load that might be over 500 pounds?

Come on Saturday, when the truck scales are open from 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Staff working on Sundays are directed to turn away loads over 500 pounds, for which we are required to charge under the County code.

Avoid the weekend crowds

The Transfer Station's Public Unloading Facility and Recycling lots are open until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in addition to the usual daytime hours. There is very light traffic in the evening. So, if you want to avoid long lines, try a weekday evening trip (loads must be under 500 pounds).

Deer rescue at the Oaks Landfill

Last Friday, County and State personnel responded to help a deer in distress that had somehow gotten into the fenced lagoon area at the Oaks Landfill leachate pre-treatment facility.

The deer had slipped into a lined lagoon. It could not get out because the liner was too slippery. Fortunately, that lagoon had only clean storm water in it.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources representative chased the deer around in the water with our small boat to tire it out. He was then able to capture it.

The men took the deer to a safe location to untie it, and it went on its way.

The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest day of the year for sewer backups! Fats, oil, and grease sent down the drain during Thanksgiving meal preparation and cleanup contribute to this.

• Cooking oil recycling: Bring your used cooking oil to the Shady Grove Solid Waste Transfer Station. Recycle empty cooking oil bottles in your blue bin. See cooking oil recycling details on our website.

La caída de hojas del otoño 2015 está en pleno apogeo, y también están nuestros recolectores del Condado de Montgomery.

Aspirando las hojas, ofrecido por la División de Servicios de Carreteras del Contado, comenzó hoy, 9 de noviembre del 2015.  Para efectos del aspirado de hojas el Distrito de Recolección de Hojas tiene los siguientes límites: al sur de Bel Pre Road, al este de I-270/I-495 y al oeste de New Hampshire Avenue, hasta la línea limítrofe con el Distrito. La recolección de ramas en las aceras es ofrecida por la División de Servicios de Desechos Solidos durante todo el año. Si usted recibe servicio de reciclaje por intermedio del Condado, amontone las hojas en la acera el día de reciclaje antes de las 07:00a.m.,  en bolsas de papel o contenedores reusables. The 2015 autumn leaf drop is in full swing, and so are our Montgomery County, Maryland, collection operations!

Leaf vacuuming, provided by the County's Division of Highway Services, began today, November 9, 2015. The Leaf Collection District for vacuuming services has these general boundaries: south of Bel Pre Road, east of I-270/I-495 and west of New Hampshire Avenue, to the District line. Curbside yard trim collections, provided by the Division of Solid Waste Services, are year-round. If you receive County-provided recycling service, set your leaves at the curb on your collection day by 7 a.m., in paper yard trim bags or reusable containers. Do not use plastic bags.
