Renting a truck on a weekend for moving a large load that might be over 500 pounds?

Come on Saturday, when the truck scales are open from 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Staff working on Sundays are directed to turn away loads over 500 pounds, for which we are required to charge under the County code.

Avoid the weekend crowds

The Transfer Station's Public Unloading Facility and Recycling lots are open until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in addition to the usual daytime hours. There is very light traffic in the evening. So, if you want to avoid long lines, try a weekday evening trip (loads must be under 500 pounds).

Deer rescue at the Oaks Landfill

Last Friday, County and State personnel responded to help a deer in distress that had somehow gotten into the fenced lagoon area at the Oaks Landfill leachate pre-treatment facility.

The deer had slipped into a lined lagoon. It could not get out because the liner was too slippery. Fortunately, that lagoon had only clean storm water in it.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources representative chased the deer around in the water with our small boat to tire it out. He was then able to capture it.

The men took the deer to a safe location to untie it, and it went on its way.

Prevent sewer backups after Thanksgiving

The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest day of the year for sewer backups! Fats, oil, and grease sent down the drain during Thanksgiving meal preparation and cleanup contribute to this.

• Fat and grease disposal: "Can it, cool it, throw it away!" See detailed instructions for fats and grease from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
• Cooking oil recycling: Bring your used cooking oil to the Shady Grove Solid Waste Transfer Station. Recycle empty cooking oil bottles in your blue bin. See cooking oil recycling details on our website.

The 2015 autumn leaf drop is in full swing, and so are our Montgomery County, Maryland, collection operations!

Leaf vacuuming, provided by the County's Division of Highway Services, began today, November 9, 2015. The Leaf Collection District for vacuuming services has these general boundaries: south of Bel Pre Road, east of I-270/I-495 and west of New Hampshire Avenue, to the District line. See details about leaf vacuuming, including a Collection District map and schedule.

Curbside yard trim collections, provided by the Division of Solid Waste Services, are year-round. If you receive County-provided recycling service, set your leaves at the curb on your collection day by 7 a.m., in paper yard trim bags or reusable containers. Do not use plastic bags. See curbside yard trim preparation and collection details. Look up your collection day and confirm County-provided service. Request yard trim decals for reusable containers.

Consider composting your leaves. See our composting tips. Get started by picking up a compost bin - available to Montgomery County residents and businesses at no charge - at one of our 20 locations.

No, do not recycle your pesticide containers.

Pesticide residue acts as a containment in empty containers, making them unacceptable for recycling. And, when residents send containers with remaining products to the Recycling Center, the products can create dangerous situations.

Monday, September 7, 2015 - Labor Day - is a recycling and trash collection holiday. After the holiday, all County-provided recycling and trash collections will slide, and be one day later than normal.

Transfer Station assists Pepco with transformer delivery

When weight restrictions on nearby roads and bridges posed challenges to delivering a 314,900 pound electrical transformer, a Pepco contractor approached the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection for assistance.

The best way to get the transformer to Pepco's Norbeck Substation in Rockville was to send it by train to the rail yard at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station. From there, a truck would haul it to the substation. 

We developed a Right of Entry and Access Agreement which was executed by all affected parties, including our operations contractors. 

Everyone assisted in making the delivery a success! The transformer was moved from the rail yard using specialized equipment and a trailer designed to distribute the weight of the transformer over many axles.  It left the site under police escort last night, July 22, 2015.
